Members of the van Crowninshield family emigrated to the United States from the Netherlands at the end of the 18th century and soon established themselves in a variety of occupations, including that of writing. One of my ancestors, Jerome van Crowninshield Smith, not only wrote a number of popular books, which included several volumes on history and travel, but was also a prominent doctor in Boston, where he later was elected mayor. I, like my ancestor, have always had a love of travel and a fascination with adventurous living. It's taken me around the world and, in part, led me to join the military at a relatively early point in my life where, for a time, I considered making a career of it. I am currently in the legal profession and divide the bulk of my time between a flat I've inherited in London and the city of my birth, New York.
